The International Code Council (ICC), promulgator of the International Codes and Standards, maintains a process for updating the entire family of International Codes based on receipt of proposals from interested individuals and organizations involved in the construction industry as well as the general public. The codes are updated every three years (2009current edition, 2012, 2015 editions, etc.). In the past, the codes were updated on 2-18 month cycles, with an intervening supplement between cycles. Starting with the 2009/2010 Cycle, ICC is transitioning to a development cycle where there will only be a single cycle of code development with the codes split into two groups. For each group of codes, there are two hearings for each code development cycle; the first where a committee considers the proposals and recommends an action on each proposal and the second to consider comments submitted in response to the committee action on proposals.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology announces that a free two-day public workshop on Smart Grid interoperability standards will be held on August 3-4, 2009, in the Washington, DC area. Space is limited to about 300 people. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis. Opening and closing plenary sessions will be Webcast, and the breakout sessions will be teleconferenced. Information on how to view the Webcasts and join the teleconferences will be posted in advance on the NIST smart grid Web site at: https://www.nist.gov/ smartgrid/.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in conjunction with the National Security Agency, will hold a public workshop on September 1-3, 2009, at the NIST Gaithersburg campus. The workshop is open to the public but requires registration and an attendance fee. The goal of this workshop is to have the workshop serve as the first step towards the development of a Special Publication on Privilege (Access) Management. A four-pronged approach will be taken to create a suite of definitions for Privilege (Access) Management, create standard models and frameworks for the U.S. Government, based on ITU-T X.812, create a statement on technology and needed research, and to document scenarios and policy considerations. There will be subsequent workshops to further develop and refine the content of this draft Special Publication.
