The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) publishes notice at least once monthly of certain Federal agency requests for records disposition authority (records schedules). Once approved by NARA, records schedules provide mandatory instructions on what happens to records when no longer needed for current Government business. They authorize the preservation of records of continuing value in the National Archives of the United States and the destruction, after a specified period, of records lacking administrative, legal, research, or other value. Notice is published for records schedules in which agencies propose to destroy records not previously authorized for disposal or reduce the retention period of records already authorized for disposal. NARA invites public comments on such records schedules, as required by 44 U.S.C. 3303a(a).

In accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, as amended (5 U.S.C. Appendix 2), the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) announces a meeting of the Advisory Committee on the Electronic Records Archives (ACERA). The committee serves as a deliberative body to advise the Archivist of the United States, on technical, mission, and service issues related to the Electronic Records Archives (ERA). This includes, but is not limited to, advising and making recommendations to the Archivist on issues related to the development, implementation and use of the ERA system. Date of Meeting: April 30-May 1, 2008. Time of Meeting: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Place of Meeting: 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW., Washington, DC 20408-0001. This meeting will be open to the public. However, due to space limitations and access procedures, the name and telephone number of individuals planning to attend must be submitted to the Electronic Records Archives Program at era.program@nara.gov.

NARA proposes to amend its regulations on public use of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, for meetings or special events. This proposal incorporates changes in available space as a result of the renovation of the National Archives Building by identifying the kinds of space available and procedures for requesting use. NARA also proposes to charge fees for the use of public areas in the National Archives Building in accordance with 44 U.S.C. 2903(b). The proposed rule affects the public.

NARA is revising its regulations to increase the number of hours its archival research rooms are open in the Washington, DC, area. In response to an interim final rule published on February 1, 2008, we received 53 comments, which are discussed in the SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION section of this preamble. This final rule document confirms without change to the rule the effective date of the regulation.
