Land Acquisitions; Hopi Tribe, Coconino County and Navajo County, Arizona
Under the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute Settlement Act of 1996 (Act), Congress approved a final settlement of multiple claims the Hopi Tribe had against the United States. Under the Act, Congress authorized the Hopi Tribe to acquire up to 500,000 acres of land in northern Arizona to be taken into trust, including private land purchased from willing sellers and interspersed State trust land held by the State of Arizona located within the exterior boundaries of the purchased private land. The Hopi Tribe purchased 161,423.58 acres of private land from willing sellers, which are held in trust by the United States. Additionally, together with the State of Arizona, the Hopi Tribe has identified for acquisition an additional 110,759.17 acres of interspersed State trust lands. At the request of the Department of the Interior, the Department of Justice has initiated proceedings to condemn the interspersed State trust lands identified by the Hopi Tribe and the State of Arizona under the authority of section 6 of the Act and applicable Federal law. The parcels to be condemned and then taken into trust are described below.

This Public Land Order (PLO) withdraws 39.6 acres of National Forest System lands from location and entry under the United States mining laws, but not from leasing under the mineral or geothermal leasing laws or disposal under the Mineral Materials Act of 1947, for a period of 20 years, subject to valid existing rights, to protect the integrity of the historic and cultural resources located within the Schwartz and Leff Administrative Site along the North Fork of the Salmon River in Siskiyou County, California.
Whiskeytown Unit, Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area; Bicycling
The National Park Service proposes to amend the special regulations for Whiskeytown National Recreation Area to allow bicycle use on approximately 79.8 miles of multi-use trails. National Park Service regulations require promulgation of a special regulation to allow bicycles on new trails outside of developed areas and for existing trails that require construction or significant modification to accommodate bicycles.
Submission of U.S. Nomination to the World Heritage List
The Department of the Interior has submitted a nomination to the World Heritage List for Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. This is the third notice required by the Department of the Interior's World Heritage Program regulations.
