Legal Services Corporation – Federal Register Recent Federal Regulation Documents

LSC is proposing a number of revisions to its regulations on procedures for disclosure of information under the Freedom of Information Act to implement changes in that law made by the OPEN Government Act of 2007. LSC is also proposing to designate the Office of Inspector General as a separate component for receiving requests for its records and to make two technical amendments.

It is anticipated that the grant amount for the service area will be similar to the amount awarded for calendar year 2008approximately $1.1 million. The grant will be awarded in January 2009.

The Legal Services Corporation (``Corporation'') is required by law to establish maximum income levels for individuals eligible for legal assistance. On January 30, 2008 the Corporation issued a document updating the specified income levels to reflect the annual amendments to the Federal Poverty Guidelines as issued by the Department of Health and Human Services. This notice corrects a typo appearing in the supplementary information, but does not affect the income levels set forth in the charts. Specifically, in the sentence in the last paragraph of the SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION, 73 FR 5458, Jan. 30, 2008, beginning ``These charts are for references purposes * * *,'' the first percentage referred to should be ``125%'' instead of ``200%.''

The Legal Services Corporation will eliminate the Hawai'i migrant service area, MHI, effective April 1, 2008, because any eligible migrant population in Hawai'i can be more effectively and efficiently served through the Hawai'i basic field grant.

The annualized grant amount is anticipated to be approximately $310,000. The grant will be awarded in or around June 2008.

LSC is amending section 1626.10(a) of this regulation to permit LSC grant recipients to provide legal assistance to otherwise financially eligible citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau legally residing in the United States.

The Legal Services Corporation is beginning the process of developing its FY 2009 budget request to Congress and is soliciting suggestions as to what the request should be.
