3506(c)(2)(A)), provides the general
public and Federal agencies with an
opportunity to comment on proposed,
revised, and continuing collections of
information. This helps the Department
assess the impact of its information
collection requirements and minimize
the public’s reporting burden. It also
helps the public understand the
Department’s information collection
requirements and provide the requested
data in the desired format. ED is
soliciting comments on the proposed
information collection request (ICR) that

necessary to the proper functions of the
Department; (2) will this information be

(3) is the estimate of burden accurate;
(4) how might the Department enhance
the quality, utility, and clarity of the

might the Department minimize the
burden of this collection on the
respondents, including through the use

Title of Collection: Targeted Teacher
Shortage Areas Nationwide Listing.
OMB Control Number: 1840–0595.
Type of Review: Extension of an
existing information collection.
Respondents/Affected Public: State,
Local, or Tribal Governments.
Total Estimated Number of Annual
Responses: 57.
Total Estimated Number of Annual
Burden Hours: 4,560.
Abstract: This request is for approval
of recordkeeping and reporting
requirements that are contained in the
Federal Family Education Loan
Programs (FFELP) regulations, which
address the targeted teacher deferment
provision of the Higher Education Act of
1965, as amended. The information
collected is necessary for a State to
support its annual request for
designation of teacher shortage areas
within the State. The collection of
information from Chief State School
Officers to support and document the
request for teacher shortage areas within
a given State can potentially enable
student financial aid recipients to defer,
reduce, or discharge loan debts and/or
meet other specified obligations.
