Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries
provides policymakers and the public
with comprehensive, verifiable, and
timely measures of fatal work injuries.
Data are complied from various Federal,
State, and local sources and include

information on how the incident
occurred as well as various
characteristics of the employers and the
deceased worker. This information is
used for surveillance of fatal work
injuries and for developing prevention
strategies.
This information collection is subject
to the PRA. A Federal agency generally
cannot conduct or sponsor a collection
of information, and the public is
generally not required to respond to an
information collection, unless it is
approved by the OMB under the PRA
and displays a currently valid OMB
Control Number. In addition,
notwithstanding any other provisions of
law, no person shall generally be subject
to penalty for failing to comply with a
collection of information if the
collection of information does not
display a currently valid OMB control
number. See 5 CFR 1320.5(a) and
1320.6. The DOL obtains OMB approval
for this information collection under
OMB Control Number 1220–0133. The
current OMB approval is scheduled to
expire on February 28, 2011; however,
it should be noted that information
collections submitted to the OMB
receive a month-to-month extension

from a claimant receiving workers’
compensation benefits over an extended
period of time. The OWCP uses his
information to determine whether the
claimant is entitled to continue
receiving benefits and whether the
benefit amount should be adjusted.
