AGENCY:
This notice sets forth the
schedule and proposed agenda of an
upcoming meeting of the National Board
for Education Sciences. The notice also
describes the functions of the
Committee. Notice of this meeting is
required by Section 10(a)(2) of the
Federal Advisory Committee Act and is
intended to notify the public of their
opportunity to attend the meeting.
DATES: September 29, 2010.
Time: 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. The meeting
will be in recess between the hours of
1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

SUMMARY:
The
National Board for Education Sciences
is authorized by Section 116 of the
Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002
(ESRA). The Board advises the Director
of the Institute of Education Sciences
(IES) on the establishment of activities
to be supported by the Institute, on the
funding for applications for grants,
contracts, and cooperative agreements

for research after the completion of peer
review, and reviews and evaluates the
work of the Institute. At this time, the
Board consists of ten of fifteen
appointed members due to the
expirations of the terms of former
members. The Board shall meet and can
carry out official business because the
ESRA states that a majority of the voting
members serving at the time of a
meeting constitutes a quorum.
On September 29 starting at 8:15 a.m.
the Board will approve the agenda and
hear remarks from the Chair and the
Executive Director. From 8:30 a.m. to
9:15 a.m., IES Director John Easton will
propose priorities for the Institute,
followed by a Board discussion until 10
a.m. After a break ending at 10:15 a.m.,
the Board will hear reports from exofficio members who represent other
agencies. Presentations will follow on
the What Works Clearinghouse from 11
a.m. to noon, and on the Evaluation of
Charter School Impacts from noon to 1
p.m. The meeting will be in recess from
1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. to allow members to
participate in a swearing-in ceremony in
the office of the Secretary of Education.
The ceremony will not be open to the
public. The meeting will reconvene at
3:15 p.m. in the IES Board Room for
presentations and updates from the IES
Commissioners and staff. The meeting
will adjourn at 5 p.m.

above) on September 20 and will be
posted on the Board Web site https://ies

Records are kept of all Committee
proceedings and are available for public
