Before work is performed on the anchor windlass or any of its attached accessories, you must ensure that the following steps are taken:

(1) The devil claws (also known as chain toppers) must be made fast to the anchor chains.

(2) The riding pawls must be in the engaged position.

(3) In the absence of devil claws and riding pawls, the anchor chains must be secured to a suitable fixed structure of the vessel.
