AGENCY SUMMARY

Founded in 1839, Longwood University is a coeducational, comprehensive public university offering programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees. It currently serves over 4,000 students. The university offers 100 undergraduate majors, minors and concentrations and four areas of graduate study. The main campus is located in Farmville and Longwood participates in the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, located in South Boston. Code of Virginia, Title 23, Chapter 15.

The board of visitors or other governing body of every state-supported institution of higher education in Virginia is authorized to establish rules and regulations for the acceptance of students; for the conduct of students and the suspension and dismissal of students who fail or refuse to abide by such rules; for the rescission or restriction of financial aid; for the employment of professors, teachers, instructors and all other employees; and for parking and traffic on property owned by the institution. In addition, the board of visitors or other governing body is authorized to establish programs to promote compliance among students with laws relating to the use of alcoholic beverages and to establish guidelines for the initiation or induction into any social fraternity or sorority.
