AGENCY SUMMARY
The Department of Rail and Public Transportation is subject to the policy oversight of the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The department is empowered to do all the acts necessary or convenient for establishing, maintaining, improving, and promoting public transportation, transportation demand management, ridesharing, and passenger and freight rail transportation and safety in the Commonwealth. In addition to its general powers and enumerated statutory responsibilities, the department is authorized to administer the Rail Industrial Access Program, which assists economic development when new or expanding industry needs rail service. Code of Virginia, Title 33.1, Chapter 1, Article 15. The department also works to preserve and upgrade rail facilities through the Rail Preservation Program.
