AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Nursing is an agency within the Department of Health Professions. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 25. See the summary for the department for the regulatory power applicable to all health regulatory boards. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 24.

The board is authorized to license registered and practical nurses, to register clinical nurse specialists, to certify nurse aides and establish a career advancement certification for certified nurse aides, to register medication aides in assisted living facilities, to approve and prescribe minimum standards for nursing education programs, to approve curricula therefor, to certify massage therapists, and to promulgate regulations for the delegation of certain nursing tasks and procedures to an appropriately trained unlicensed person and regulations for collecting, storing and making available nursing workforce information. It is also authorized, jointly with the Board of Medicine, to promulgate regulations respecting the practice of nurse practitioners in collaboration and consultation with patient care team physicians and regulations governing prescriptive authority for nurse practitioners. The board is authorized to cooperate with the Board of Health's promulgation of regulations establishing a nursing scholarship and loan repayment program for registered nurses, practical nurses, and certified nurse aides who agree to perform a period of nursing service in a Commonwealth long-term care facility.
