AGENCY SUMMARY
The Board of Medicine is an agency within the Department of Health Professions. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 25. See the summary for the department for the regulatory power applicable to all health regulatory boards. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 24.
The board is authorized to license the practice of acupuncture, chiropractic, medicine, occupational therapy, osteopathic medicine, podiatry, radiologic technology, and respiratory care; to license physician assistants, athletic trainers, certified professional midwives, polysomnographic technologists, and behavior analysts and assistant behavior analysts; to promulgate regulations to carry out the licensing act; jointly with the Board of Nursing, to promulgate regulations respecting the services and prescriptive authority of nurse practitioners; and, jointly with the Board of Pharmacy, to promulgate regulations to facilitate the development and implementation of safe and effective collaborative agreements between practitioners and pharmacists. For reports required to be made to the board by professional societies and licensees respecting drug addiction, alcoholism, psychiatric illness, incompetence or improper conduct of board licensees, see Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 29, Article 1. The board is required to prescribe by regulation such requirements as may be necessary to ensure continued practitioner competence which may include continuing education, testing, or any other requirement.
