AGENCY SUMMARY
The Board of Health Professions is an agency within the Department of Health Professions. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapters 24 and 25. The board is authorized to evaluate the need for coordination among health profession regulatory boards within the department; evaluate all health occupations and professions in the Commonwealth and recommend whether each should be regulated and the degree of regulation to impose; monitor the policies and activities of the department; comment, as appropriate, on all regulations proposed or promulgated by the boards of the department; and review enforcement and discipline processes of the boards and the department. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 25.
In addition, the board is authorized to promulgate regulations to administer the Practitioner Self-Referral Act. The Act establishes the framework for determining the legality of investment, referral and other activities of licensed, certified and unregulated health care practitioners and entities in the Commonwealth. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 24.1.
In addition to its functions concerned with the separate health boards, the board is authorized to adopt regulations to establish the minimum requisite education, training and experience necessary for a person to hold himself out to be, or advertise or allow himself to be advertised as, a dietitian or nutritionist. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 27.1. The board is also authorized to adopt regulations to certification necessary for a person to hold himself out to be, or advertise or allow himself to be advertised as, a dialysis patient care technician or a dialysis care technician.
