AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers is an agency within the Department of Health Professions. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 25. See the summary for the department for the regulatory power applicable to all health regulatory boards. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 24.

The board is authorized to license individuals and establishments providing funeral and embalming services, to set standards for and approve schools of mortuary science or funeral service, to supervise programs for funeral service interns, to regulate preneed funeral contracts and preneed funeral trust accounts, to register crematories, and to promulgate regulations to improve and promote standards of service and practice and otherwise carry out the licensing act. The board is also directed to enforce applicable regulations of the State Board of Health and of local governments. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 28.
