AGENCY SUMMARY
The Board for Barbers and Cosmetology is a separate agency within the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. The director of the department acts as the board's secretary and administrative officer. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 3. The board is authorized to license barbers, cosmetologists, nail care technicians, waxing technicians, tattooers, permanent cosmetic tattooers, master permanent cosmetic tattooers, body piercers, body piercers ear only, estheticians, and master estheticians; to license barbershops, cosmetology salons, nail care salons, waxing salons, tattoo parlors, limited term tattoo parlors, body piercing salons, body piercing ear only salons, and esthetics spas; to license schools of barbering, cosmetology, nail care, waxing, tattooing, and esthetics; to set standards for licensure and professional conduct; and to promulgate regulations for those purposes.
