Rule R406-100 - Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children
Section R406-100-2 - Program Objectives

(1) WIC is a supplemental foods and nutrition education program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and is administered by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Family Health, through clinics operated by local health departments. The purpose of the WIC program is to provide nutritious supplemental foods and nutrition education to eligible persons. The program serves as an adjunct to good healthcare, during critical times of growth and development, to prevent the occurrence of health problems and improve the health status of program participants.

(2) WIC serves pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women; and infants and children up to five years of age. WIC participants belong to families that are found to have inadequate income and are determined by competent health professionals to be at nutritional risk.

(3) A primary concern of the program is to deliver preventive healthcare through screening for anemia, completion of anthropometric measurements, immunization screening, dietary counseling, nutrition education and providing breastfeeding support. In addition, participants needing other health or social services are identified at the time of certification and referred to the appropriate agency.
