Section 6.93 - Definitions

The following words and terms, when used in this subchapter, shall have the following meanings, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise:

(1) Board--The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

(2) Commissioner--The Commissioner of Higher Education.

(3) Graduate medical education program--A nationally-accredited post-medical degree (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) program that prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine in a specific specialty area, also referred to as residency training. The term also applies to the period of didactic and clinical education in a medical subspecialty which follows the completion of education in a recognized medical specialty, and which prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine in that subspecialty.

(4) Graduate professional nursing program--An educational program of a public or private institution of higher education that prepares students for a master's or doctoral degree, as defined in Texas Education Code, § 54.221.

(5) Hospital--A Texas health care facility, as defined in Texas Health and Safety Code, § 241.003, and includes a hospital owned, maintained, or operated by the state, but does not include a facility that is owned, maintained, or operated by the federal government or an agency of the federal government.

(6) Medical school--A public or independent medical institution that awards the doctor of medicine (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degree, as defined in Texas Education Code, § 61.501(1).
