Section 64:28:06:03 - Acceptance of application for duplicate certificate of title

The owner may apply for a duplicate certificate of title only if the original document or a previously issued duplicate title has been lost, mutilated, or destroyed. The mutilated certificate of title shall be attached to the application. The county treasurer or the department may not accept an application for a duplicate certificate of title if the original certificate of title is being held by the lien holder. Before acceptance of the application for duplicate title, the county treasurer or the department shall ascertain the whereabouts of the original title to prevent having two documents in circulation on the same vehicle.
