Interior vertical shafts, including stairways, elevator hoistways, service shafts, and utility shafts, must be enclosed by a minimum of one-hour fire-resistive construction. All openings into such shafts must be protected with one-hour fire assemblies which are self-closing or automatic-closing by smoke detection. All other openings must be protected from fire in a manner approved by the authority having jurisdiction. An enclosure is not required for openings serving only one adjacent floor. Vertical openings need not be protected if the building is protected by an automatic sprinkler system throughout.
