Each sleeping room of a lodging establishment, as defined in subdivision (7) of SDCL 34-18-1, shall contain smoke detectors installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. In new construction, smoke detectors shall receive their primary power from the building wiring and shall be equipped with a battery backup. The detector shall emit a signal when the batteries are low. Wiring shall be permanent and without a disconnecting switch other than those required for overcurrent protection. Smoke detectors may be solely battery-operated when installed in existing lodging establishments.
