Section 61-103.R - Electrical Requirements (II)

(1) Installation.

(a) Materials including equipment, conductors, controls and signaling devices shall be installed to provide a complete electrical system with the necessary characteristics and capacity to supply the electrical equipment indicated in the specifications or shown on the plans. All materials shall be listed as complying with available standards or Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. or other similarly established standards.

(b) Electrical installation systems shall be in accordance with the National Electrical Code and shall be tested to show that the equipment is installed and operates as planned or specified.

(c) The fire alarm system shall be tested initially by a factory trained manufacturer's representative.

(2) Switchboards and Power Panels: Circuit breakers or fusible switches that provide disconnecting means and over current protection for conductors connected to switchboard and panel boards shall be enclosed or guarded to provide a dead front type assembly. Over load protection devices shall be suitable for operating properly in ambient conditions.

(3) Panelboards: Panelboards serving lighting and appliance circuits shall be located on the same floor as the circuits they serve. The directory shall be labeled to conform to the actual room designations. Clear access must be maintained to the panel.

(4) Lighting.

(a) Spaces occupied by people, machinery, equipment, and approaches to buildings and parking lots shall be lighted.

(b) Resident rooms shall have general lighting which provides a minimum of twenty (20) foot-candles in all parts of the room. There shall be a minimum of thirty-five (35) foot-candles in areas used for reading, study or close work. Lighting in work areas shall be at least thirty (30) foot-candles.

(c) Lighting for reading shall be provided for each resident.

(5) Receptacles (Convenience Outlets).

(a) Resident rooms: Receptacles in residents' rooms shall be of the "safety type".

(b) Corridors: Duplex receptacles for general use shall be installed approximately fifty (50'-0"') feet apart in all corridors and no more than twenty-five (25'-0"') feet of the ends of corridors.

(6) Ground Fault Interrupting (GFI) Receptacles: Electrical circuits to fixed or portable equipment in hydrotherapy units or other wet areas shall be provided with five (5) milliampere ground fault interrupter circuits or receptacles. Ground fault interrupter receptacles shall be used on all outside receptacles and in garages and bathrooms per National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).

(7) Emergency Power.

(a) Emergency Power shall be provided for the following:
(1) Exit lights

(2) Exit access corridor lighting

(3) Fire alarm

(4) Essential communication systems

(5) Emergency heating system.
