Section 230-070-0000 - Ring

(1) Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai shall take place in a ring that complies with all requirements set forth in this division unless otherwise approved by the Administrator. Mixed Martial Arts and Combat Jiu-Jitsu may take place in a ring but must meet specified ring requirements set forth for MMA to be held in a ring.

(2) A ring must meet the following requirements:

(a) The ring must not be less than 18 feet square within the ropes, nor more than 24 feet;

(b) The ring floor must extend at least 24 inches beyond the ropes. The ring floor must be padded with ensolite or other similar closed-cell foam a minimum of 3/4 inches thick. Padding must extend beyond the ring ropes and over the edge of the platform, with a top covering of canvas, duck or similar material tightly stretched and laced to the ring platform. Material that tends to gather in lumps or ridges must not be used;

(c) The corners must be protected inside the ring with a pad at least six inches wide and covered with a material similar to the ring floor material long enough to cover all the rope joints;

(d) The ring platform must not be more than four (4) feet above the floor of the building and must have two (2) sets of suitable steps for the use of the competitors, officials and medical personnel. Ring posts must be made of metal, not more than three (3) inches in diameter, extending from the floor of the building to a height of 58 inches above the ring floor. Ring posts must be at least 18 inches away from the ring ropes;

(e) There must be four ring ropes, not less than one (1) inch in diameter and wrapped in soft material. The lower rope must be 18 inches above the ring floor with two rope separator on each side;

(f) The lower rope shall have applied around it a padding of a thickness of not less than one-half inch and of a type and construction to be approved by an authorized representative of the superintendent;

(g) The lower rope shall be offset at least 6" (six inches) and not more than 12" (twelve inches) toward the ring apron;

(h) There must not be any obstruction or object, without limitation, on any part of the ring floor;

(i) Any variance to the requirements of a ring must be approved by the Administrator.

(3) A ring used for a bout of mixed martial arts must meet the following requirements:

(a) There must be five ring ropes, not less than 1 inch in diameter and wrapped in soft material. The lowest ring rope must be 12 inches above the ring floor.

(b) All other requirements as specified in 230-070-0000(2)

(4) It is the responsibility of the promoter to have an attendant available at all times during the event capable of making emergency repairs, corrections and adjustments to the ring, the lights and other necessary fixtures.

(5) This section does not apply to an entertainment wrestling ring.
