Section 3301-24-17 - Lead professional educator license

(A) The lead professional educator license, issued in the areas specified in paragraph (B) of this rule, shall be valid for five years and shall be renewable. The lead professional educator license shall be issued to an individual who is deemed to be of good moral character and who evidences completion of the requirements specified in paragraphs (A)(1) to (A)(4) of this rule:
(1) An applicant for a
lead professional educator license shall have completed a masters degree or
higher from an accredited institution of higher
education that is accredited by a regional accrediting organization;
(2) An
applicant for a lead professional educator license shall hold one of the
following teaching credentials in the same teaching area for which the lead
professional educator license is requested: a five- year professional teaching license, a senior
professional educator license, or a permanent teaching
certificate; and
(3) An applicant
for a lead professional educator license shall have completed nine years of
successful teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate or
license, in accordance with the following specifications:
(a) A
"year" of teaching experience means actual service of not less than one hundred
twenty days within a school year, as defined in section
3319.09 of
the Revised Code.
(b) At least five years of the required nine years of
teaching experience shall have been under a five-
year professional teaching license, a senior professional educator license, an
eight year professional teaching certificate, or a permanent teaching
certificate.
(4) An
applicant for a lead professional educator license shall have met the criteria
for the distinguished level of performance described in the Ohio standards for
the teaching profession adopted by the state board of education under section
3319.61 of the
Revised Code . An
applicant shall demonstrate that they have met the criteria for the
distinguished level of performance through one of the following:
(a) Holding a valid certificate issued by the
national board for professional teaching standards ; or
(b) By meeting both of the following two
requirements:
(i) The applicant is the holder
of a teacher leader endorsement earned through completion of an approved
program of preparation, as established in rule
3301-24-05 of the
Administrative Code; and
(ii) The
applicant has a
valid master teacher designation in accordance with the definition and
criteria for a master teacher adopted by the state board of education under
section
3319.61 of the
Revised Code .
(B) Lead professional educator licenses shall be issued in the same areas for which the applicant holds a five year professional teaching license, a senior professional educator license, or a permanent teaching certificate .
