Dissemination of information of education.

(a) Specific objective.

The objective is to improve the department's capability for communicating information on education to a variety of interested audiences. Hundreds of publications originate annually from organizational units in the department that are intended to inform educators and the general public about trends, developments and effective educational programs and practices.

(b) Specific activities.

(1) Improving the quality of education department publications.
(i) To assure a minimum standard of literary quality for State Education Department publications.

1. Edit and rewrite State Education Department manuscripts as necessary. By June 1978 over 30,000 pages of SED publications will have been edited

(ii) To assure practical and effective formats for all department publications.

1. Layout, specify type, provide illustration, design and printing instructions for a variety of SED publications. By June 1978 the designs and illustrations as well as printing instructions will have been provided for approximately 350 SED publications

(2) Audiovisual services.
(i) Department administrative staff will be supported in efforts to use communications technology in presentations to the field, to other agencies and to department staff.

2. Research and assembling pre-produced, audiovisual materials. Tape and film-June 1978

(ii) A video cassette dissemination service will be initiated for transmittal of department administrative advisories on programs and practices for which replication is encouraged among the schools.

(iii) Department administrative staff and professionals in the field will be kept updated on instructional technology and communication techniques.

(iv) Technical support for audiovisual materials display will be supplied to various department units and to the self-learning center.

(3) New York State archives records appraisal and program implementation project (Projections based on eight full-time equivalent persons)
(i) Complete location and identification of official State records having historical value.

1. Review record series inventories. 20,000 record series by January 1, 1978
2. Examine records in agency offices. 200 offices (4/week) by June 30, 1978

(ii) Rescue historical records in immediate danger of loss or destruction.

1. Transfer to temporary rescue storage.
2. Microfilm.
3. Sample.

(iii) Transfer accessioned historical records to archives in Cultural Education Center.

2. Prepare transmittal documents recording legal transfer. 10,000 cubic feet by June 30, 1978

4. Flatten and deacidify needy records. 1,000 cubic feet by June 30, 1978

(iv) Make records available for use by State agency personnel and general public.

4. Study feasibility of automated index and select modalities. Plan of approach and sample alternatives-June 30, 1978
