Section 145-1.6 - Limitations on use of awards

(a) Empire State scholarships of excellence and Regents college scholarships shall be issued originally and continued in effect only for attendance upon an approved program of study below the graduate or professional level. Study toward a graduate degree, or the professional study of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, podiatry or law, is excluded.

(b) A Regents professional education in nursing scholarship shall be issued originally and continued in effect only to students matriculated in a specialized program designated for and limited to candidates for licensure as registered professional nurses. Nursing scholarship holders who are candidates for admission to upper division nursing programs, for which liberal arts study is a prerequisite but not an integral part, shall be granted a leave of absence for such period of liberal arts study but shall not be eligible for scholarship benefits therefor.

(c) A Herbert H. Lehman fellowship shall be issued originally and continued in effect only for resident study in a program leading to an appropriate graduate degree in an approved college under the direction of graduate faculties in the social sciences, public affairs, or international affairs. Education, social work, law and other professional studies as defined by the commissioner are excluded, as are programs that combine such professional studies with the study of social science, public affairs or international affairs.

(d) Regents scholarships for professional study in medicine, dentistry, optometry and veterinary medicine shall be issued originally and continued in effect only to students matriculated in registered programs designated for and limited to candidates for licensure in the practice of medicine, dentistry, optometry and veterinary medicine.

(e) Empire State Challenger undergraduate scholarships for teachers shall be issued originally and continued in effect only for attendance in a school which offers a registered program below the graduate level leading to certification as a teacher in an award field, as defined in section 145-1.17 of this Subpart.

(f) Empire State Challenger graduate fellowships for teachers shall be issued originally and continued in effect only for attendance in a registered program of graduate study leading to certification as a teacher in an award field, as defined in section 145-1.18 of this Subpart.
