Section 54.4 - Trapping

Trapping in the Wetlands - Restricted Area and the State Wildlife Refuge - Posted portions of an Area is prohibited unless a valid trapping permit is obtained. Trapping permits may be applied for by writing to the Regional Wildlife Manager, Department of Environmental Conservation, 317 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601. Trappers must provide their current trapper stamp number when applying for a permit.

(a) Fall trapping permits are valid until February 20th. Permits may be applied for beginning October 1st and fixed quotas are as follows:

(1) Perch River - 25 permits;

(2) Wilson Hill - 10 permits; and

(3) Upper and Lower Lakes - 30 permits.

(b) Spring trapping permits are valid from February 21st until the end of the trapping season unless permittees are notified in writing to remove their traps. Permits may be applied for beginning January 20th and fixed quotas are the same as in the fall.

(c) Permits will be issued no later than one week prior to the designated starting date of trapping on an area as follows:

(1) If by one week prior to the starting date of trapping, the number of applicants exceeds a quota, a random drawing will be held to fill that quota. All applicants will be notified, in writing, of the results of a random drawing.

(2) If, by one week prior to the starting date of trapping, the number of applicants is less than a quota, all applicants will receive a permit. Subsequently permits will be issued on request until the quota is filled.

(d) General trapping regulations.

(1) Only species designated on a permit may be trapped.

(2) Traps must be checked every 24 hours.
