(a) Color. For municipal, industrial, or sanitary wastes, the effluent:
(1) shall not
impart objectionable color to the receiving waters;
(2) shall not exhibit more than:
(i) true color of 100 units on the platinum
cobalt scale, or its equivalent; or
(ii) the natural color of the receiving
waters, whichever is greater.
(iii)
a true color intensity greater than specified in subparagraph (i) or (ii) of
this paragraph may be permitted when it is demonstrated that:
(a) the maximum practicable treatment will be
provided; and
(b) rapid dispersion
will take place; and
(c) the
natural color characteristics of the receiving waters will be
protected.
(b) Dissolved substances. Dissolved and colloidal substances, including nutrients, discharged in waste effluent shall be limited where necessary to prevent deposition of sediments, formation of flocculent materials, or excessive aquatic growths, that impair protected uses, violate water quality criteria, or generate additional oxygen demands upon the receiving waters.
(c) pH.
(1) Between six and nine.
(2) Where streams have high acidity levels a
discharge with a pH greater than nine may be permitted.
(d) Ammonia.
(1) In nontidal waters, not to exceed a
30-day average of 20 mg/l as nitrogen.
(2) In tidal waters, not to exceed a 30-day
average of 35 mg/l as nitrogen.
