Section 922.16 - Washing boilers

(a) Time of washing. All boilers shall be thoroughly washed as often as the water conditions require, but not less frequently than once each month. Steam reservoirs, unless otherwise required, shall be thoroughly washed out at least once each year. All boilers and steam reservoirs shall be considered as having been in continuous service between washouts unless the dates of the days that the boiler or steam reservoir were out of service are properly certified on washout reports and on the report of inspection.
(b) Plugs to be removed. When boilers or steam reservoirs are washed, all washout, arch, and water-bar plugs must be removed.
(c) Water tubes. Special attention must be given the arch or water-bar tubes to see that they are free from scale and sediment.
(d) Office record. An accurate record of all locomotive boiler and steam reservoir washouts shall be kept in the office of the operator. The following information must be entered on the day that the boiler or steam reservoir is washed:
