Section 103.7 - Signs and markers

Current through Register Vol. 46, No. 12, March 20, 2024

(a) Highway signs. The following signs are approved for use on highways with respect to ATV operation:

(1) ATV route marker.

(i) The sign shall have a white legend and border upon a green background which will be reflectorized. It shall be 24 x 18 inches with a 1/2-inch border. It shall be used along highways or parts of highways where the use of ATV's is permitted by official designation in conformance with section 2405 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law.

(ii) The ATV route marker shall be used in combinations and assemblies similar to other route markers as provided in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (17 NYCRR 251.17-251.23) to indicate the direction of permitted use. The directional arrow marker shall be mounted immediately below the ATV route marker and shall have a white legend on a green background.

(iii) It shall be located at intervals as necessary to clearly mark the permitted path of travel and at turns in the path. The height, lateral placement and orientation shall conform to the Uniform Manual of Traffic Control Devices (17 NYCRR 201.5).

(2) ATV crossing sign.

Image

(i) The sign shall have a black legend on a yellow background which shall be reflectorized. The height, lateral placement and orientation shall conform to the Uniform Manual of Traffic Control Devices (17 NYCRR 201.5).

(ii) This sign is intended to warn traffic of a reasonably well defined ATV trail crossing where conditions such as sight distance and number of ATV's crossing warrant such use. This sign shall not be used in advance of a public intersection where an intersection sign may be warranted, nor where other warning signs indicate the existence of the crossing.

(iii) The standard sign shall be 30 x 30 inches with a 1/2-inch margin and a 3/8-inch border. A larger sign, 36 x 36 inches with a 5/8-inch margin and a 7/8-inch border, may be used where greater emphasis of visibility is required. A smaller sign, 24 x 24 inches with a 3/8-inch margin and a 5/8-inch border, may be used on highways having no more than one moving lane of traffic in each direction, where approach speeds are low and where physical conditions make the use of a standard size impractical as a ground-mounted sign.

(iv) This sign is in posting category I set forth in 17 NYCRR 230.2. Advance posting distances should be measured from the near side of the crossing.

(b) Off-highway. Any sign used off-highway with respect to ATV operation shall be the appropriate sign as specified in this section and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (17 NYCRR Parts 200-302) which would be used with respect to such operation on a public highway.
