Section 56.12 - School bus strobe light

(a) One white class 2 strobe light may be affixed to a school bus, as defined in section 142 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, not including vehicles registered as school cars. Such strobe light must comply with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Standard SAE J1318, dated May 1998.

(b) Location of strobe light. The strobe light shall be located on the center line of the bus roof as close as possible to one third of the roof length forward from the rear of the bus. The height of the bus, including such light, shall not exceed 13 feet, 6 inches above the ground.

(c) Operation. The strobe light shall be operated by a master switch with a pilot light visible to the operator. The pilot light shall illuminate when the strobe light is operating. The strobe light shall only be operational when students are being picked up, discharged or transported to or from school or school functions when conditions impede the visibility of the school bus.

(d) Incorporation by reference. The provisions of the Society of Automotive Engineers standard which have been incorporated by reference in this Part have been filed in the Office of the Secretary of State of the State of New York, the publication so filed entitled SAE J1318, revised May of 1998. The regulations incorporated by reference may be examined at the Office of the Department of State, 41 State Street, Albany, NY 12231-0001, at the Supreme Court Libraries, the Legislative Library, the New York State and the Department of Motor Vehicles Law Library, Swan Street Building, Albany, NY 12228.
