Section 56.10 - Length exemptions

(a) Notwithstanding section 385(3)(b) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, a trailer or semitrailer which is the middle vehicle in a three vehicle combination of vehicles may exceed the statutory length limit of 281/2 feet if the excess length is caused solely by a platform and related supports which serve to hold a fifth wheel to which a semitrailer is attached. Nothing contained herein shall be construed as permitting the cargo capacity of such trailer or semitrailer to exceed 28 1/2 feet in length. Nothing contained herein shall be construed as permitting such trailer or semitrailer, including the fifth wheel assembly designed to accommodate a three vehicle combination, to exceed 48 feet in length, or 53 feet in length if qualified under Vehicle and Traffic Law section 385(3)(e).

(b) Notwithstanding section 385(3) or (4) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, any vehicle with a maximum gross weight of 10,000 pounds or more, any combination of vehicles, and any school bus regardless of weight or seating capacity may exceed the statutory length limit by up to one foot in the front or rear or both if the overage is caused by a closed circuit television camera connected to a monitor which gives the driver a better view of the road immediately to the front or rear of the vehicle. Nothing contained herein shall be construed as permitting the main body of such vehicle to exceed the statutory length limit.
