Section 56.1 - Introduction

Section 220 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law authorizes the commissioner to permit the installation and use of equipment which he determines will reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities or otherwise contribute to highway safety, notwithstanding any other provision of law. The commissioner is further authorized to establish standards for the manufacture and use of any equipment for which such an exemption is granted. Equipment specified in the following sections of this Part has been determined by the commissioner to contribute to highway safety, and the exemptions specified are granted to such equipment, subject to any standards specified therein.
