Section 26.1 - Introduction

Chapter 843 of the Laws of 1984 amended sections 158-b and 401(7) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law to require the department to provide "van pool" registration plates. The purpose of the legislation is to provide a designated series of plates for vehicles utilized in a van pool vehicle operation. Vehicles displaying van pool plates may be able to qualify for special privileges which may be given to such vehicles such as use of commuter lanes, commuter parking areas and gas rationing.
