Current through Register Vol. 46, No. 12, March 20, 2024

If a certificate of title is lost, destroyed or mutilated, the owner may apply for a duplicate certificate of title. An application for a duplicate certificate of title (Form MV-802) must be obtained from an issuing office of the department, appropriately completed and forwarded to the Title Bureau, Department of Motor Vehicles, South Mall, Albany, NY 12228, together with the appropriate fee. In addition, the nontransferable registration for the vehicle may be required to be presented to the issuing office. If so, the registration shall be returned to the owner, and may bear the notation "Duplication Title Applied For." If the certificate of title has been mutilated and not lost or destroyed, the mutilated certificate of title must also be forwarded with the application. If such application is proper and sufficient, a duplicate certificate of title will be issued. If the certificate of title which was lost is later recovered, the recovered certificate of title must be forwarded to the title bureau at the address above.
