Part 542 - Firearms
Section 542.7 - Safety standards for securing firearms and ammunition

(a) Individuals who are authorized by the commissioner or his or her designee or facility director to possess firearms on the grounds of a facility shall meet all safety standards described in this section.

(1) All firearms and ammunition possessed by employees living on the grounds of a State-operated facility shall be stored only in the employee's room or home.

(2) All firearms and ammunition possessed in family care homes shall be stored in a section of the home which is not ordinarily accessible to residents.

(3) All firearms and ammunition in family care homes shall be stored in separate double-locked cabinets which are in separate locations. Under no circumstances shall firearms and ammunition be stored in the same cabinet.

(4) Keys to storage cabinets in family care homes shall not be accessible to residents.

(5) All firearms which are part of a gun collection shall be rendered inoperable by removal of the firing mechanism.

(b) The facility safety officer shall inspect all firearms, ammunition and storage arrangements in family care homes at least twice each calendar year.
