Section 16:53-3.38 - Fuel system

(a) All parts of the fuel system shall be securely installed outside of the passenger section and shall be located or protected so as to prevent damage to any part thereof.
(b) Autobuses manufactured after January 1, 1974, shall have the fuel supply line fitting located in the top of the tank.
(c) The filler cap shall be non-detachable, leakproof, and spillproof.
(d) A gasoline tank shall not be placed below an aisle unless the area over such tank is protected by metal shielding.
(e) A fuel supply system using a fuel other than gasoline or diesel shall meet all of the requirements set forth in 49 CFR § 393.69, incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented, or National Fire Protection Association Standard 52 "Compressed Natural Gas Vehicular Fuel Systems Code," incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented, whichever is applicable. (f) All autobuses manufactured after January 1, 1974 shall be equipped with fuel tanks certified and marked by the manufacturer to be in compliance with 49 CFR § 393.67, incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented, pertaining to liquid fuel tanks. Replacement fuel tanks installed on any autobus after January 1, 1974 shall comply with this subsection.
(g) Fuel and any other combustible material or compressed gas, other than compressed gas contained in fire extinguishers, shall not be carried or stored in the passenger compartment.
(h) Fuel tanks and systems shall conform to 49 CFR § 393.65, incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented, and either 49 CFR § 393.67 or § 393.69, whichever is applicable, incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented.
