Section 16:53-1.16 - Fuel tanks and fuel systems

(a) Fuel tanks and systems shall meet all applicable Federal requirements as set forth in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 301 ( 49 CFR § 571.301) , incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented.

(b) Fuel tanks and filler pipes shall be located wholly outside of the body to the rear of the line of the windshield and/or the front axle, as physical conditions permit, and be properly insulated to prevent fire.

(c) Fuel tanks shall be constructed and located in a manner that will permit the filling and draining thereof only from the outside of the van-type autobus.

(d) The filler cap shall be non-detachable, leakproof, and spillproof.

(e) Fuel and any other combustible material or compressed gas, other than compressed gas contained in fire extinguishers, shall not be carried or stored in the passenger compartment.
