(a) For an approved defensive driving course provided in a traditional classroom setting:
1. The sponsoring agency's motor vehicle defensive
driving course shall provide at least six hours of instruction of which a minimum of
four hours shall be classroom instruction.
2. Not more than three hours of the six hours of
instruction shall be conducted by use of audiovisual aids, including, but not
limited to:
i. Films and/or videotapes;
ii. Filmstrips;
iii. Slides; and
iv. Digital video discs.
3. Not more than 30 students shall be scheduled in
any given class; provided, however, that up to five additional students may attend a
class if they have failed to attend a previously scheduled class.
4. The use of visual aids such as magnetic boards,
flip charts, and blackboards shall be incorporated into the curriculum.
5. The lesson plans for traditional classroom
settings shall utilize educational techniques designed to encourage interaction
between students and instructor as a method of instruction.
(b) The curriculum content of any approved defensive driving course shall be predicated on defensive driving techniques, including, but not limited to:
1. Alcohol and drug
usage as an accident factor;
2. The risk
factors involved in improper driver attitude and behavior such as speeding,
tailgating, reckless driving, inattentiveness, careless driving, and improper lane
use;
3. Adjustment of driving patterns
to compensate for adverse weather conditions;
4. Following distances;
5. Communication with other road users;
and
6. Current motor vehicle and traffic
laws of New Jersey.
(c) For an approved defensive driving course provided on DVD/video or online, by means of a computer-assisted virtual classroom, the sponsoring agency shall provide:
1. No less than six hours of instruction and
curriculum information;
2. No
advertising during the six hours of instruction;
3. The use of visual aids such as movies, audio
instruction, computer graphics and interactive participatory programs, to aid in
instruction and student comprehension;
4. Informational module quizzes at the close of
each section of information which must be successfully completed by the student
before progression to the next informational module;
5. A proficiency examination presented upon
completion of all informational modules which incorporates questions from each
informational module;
6. An explanation
of all correct and incorrect answers to questions for the proficiency examination
and module completion quizzes;
7.
Supplemental material including books, manuals and worksheets for student study and
review;
8. Technology assistance for
DVD/video, online, or computer related problems; and
9. Twenty-four-hour "live" telephone hotline for
support and assistance for students provided by a New Jersey certified
instructor.
