Section 12:185-29.3 - Stairways

(a) Stairways shall conform to the Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23.

(b) All stairways shall be equipped with handrails not more than 34 inches nor less than 30 inches high, measuring from the top of the rail to the surface of the tread in line with the face of the risers at the forward edge of the tread.

(c) Flights of stairs having four or more risers shall be provided with handrails as follows:

1. On all open sides.

2. On one side of enclosed stairways less than 44 inches in width.

3. On both sides of enclosed stairways 44 inches or more but less than 88 inches in width.

4. On both sides and in the center of stairways 88 inches or more in width.

(d) The treads of stairways shall present a minimum slipping hazard, shall be of uniform width and height, and shall be kept in good repair.

(e) Stairways which are enclosed shall have at least 6 1/2 feet overhead clearance.

(f) Surface stairways shall not be set on an angle of more than 45 degrees from the horizontal.
