Section 12:185-21.6 - Pulleys and belts

(a) All pulleys, parts of pulleys, horizontal belts and chains, which are seven feet or less from the floor or the floor of a platform shall be guarded for their entire length, if located over passageways of work places and if the center distance between pulleys is 10 feet or more.

(b) All vertical or inclined belt chain or rope drives shall be adequately guarded to a height of at least seven feet from the floor.

(c) When the distance to the nearest fixed pulley, clutch or hanger does not exceed the width of the belt used, a guide shall be provided to prevent the belt from leaving the pulley on the side where insufficient clearance exists.

(d) Belts or overhanging flat pulleys on line shafts shall be provided with a stop to prevent the belt from running off the pulley.

(e) All overhead chain and link belt drives shall be provided with fully enclosed guards.
