(a) A small animal patient shall be anesthetized using an endotracheal tube for a complete oral examination, intraoral radiography, and dental scaling to be performed.
(b) Large animals and exotic patients shall be administered sedatives, tranquilizers, analgesics, or anesthetics based on the veterinarian's judgement and best practice.
(c) The veterinarian shall use the following criteria to determine if referral to a veterinary dental specialist or a practice with a veterinary anesthesiologist is appropriate:
(1) When the dental procedure requires
skills, equipment, and expertise beyond the level of capabilities of the
primary care veterinarian;
(2) When
the client expressed the desire for a higher level of care that exceeds the
capabilities of the primary care veterinarian; or
(3) When there is significant anesthetic risk
factors and comorbidities.
