Section Saf-C 1314.11 - Entrance Doors

(a) A single door may be used if the width of the door opening does not exceed 40 inches.
(b) Two doors shall be used if any single door opening exceeds 40 inches.
(c) All doors shall open outward.
(d) All doors shall have fastening devices to hold doors in the open position.
(e) All doors shall be weather sealed. Each school bus with double doors shall be constructed so that a flange on the forward door overlaps the edge of the rear door when closed. In the event optional power doors are installed, the design shall permit release of the doors for opening and closing by the attendant from the platform inside the school bus.
(f) When manually operated dual doors are provided, the rear door shall have at least a one-point fastening device to the door frame.
(g) The forward mounted door shall have at least 3-point fastening devices. One shall be to the header, one to the floor line of the body and the other into the rear door.
(h) Locking devices shall be functional so as to secure the doors when the doors are in the closed position.
(i) The door and hinge mechanism shall be of strength equivalent to that of a standard entrance door.
(j) Door materials, panels and structural strength shall be equivalent to those of a standard entrance and emergency doors. Color, rub rail extensions, lettering and other exterior features shall match adjacent sections of the body.
(k) Each door shall have windows surrounded by rubber and compatible within one inch of the lower line of the adjacent sash.
(l) Each school bus shall have a switch installed so that the lifting mechanism will not operate when the lift platform is closed.
