(a) Auxiliary fuel-fired heaters may be used on a school bus. The heaters shall use the same fuel and tank as the engine of the school bus. There shall be no adjustments necessary in the event the fuel is changed from "Diesel-1" to "Diesel-2" or a blend. The heaters shall be equipped with low voltage protection.

(b) The heaters shall be installed according to the manufacturer's specifications and shall not emit exhaust in a manner that might endanger any passenger. The exhaust pipe shall be protected by an approved wire mesh screen or heat shield to prevent burns.

(c) The heaters shall be mounted under the chassis to the frame rail, between the drive axle and steering axle on the left side of the school bus. No portion of the heater or exhaust shall extend outside the skirt, into the interior or any other location except under the school bus.

(d) The heaters and fuel lines shall be provided with an approved crash protection device to minimize fuel leakage.

(e) The heaters shall be either direct hot air systems or connected to the engine's coolant system. When connected to the engine, the heaters may be used to preheat the engine for starting, or to preheat and add supplementary heat to the heating system.

(f) All auxiliary heaters shall meet or exceed the requirements of FMVSS 301 as was in effect on the date of manufacture for the school bus.
