Section Saf-C 1311.09 - Tires and Rims

(a) Tires and rims of proper size and tires with load ratings that comply with the chassis manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating, shall be utilized. The use of multi-piece rims or tube type tires shall not be permitted on any school bus manufactured on or after January 1, 1997.
(b) The use of recaps or retreads on the front wheels of each school bus shall be prohibited.
(c) Dual rear tires shall be used on each type B, C or D school bus and on each type A school bus if the chassis was manufactured with dual rear tires.
(d) All tires on any given axle shall be of the same size and ply rating, radial or non radial design, and comply with the chassis manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating.
(e) In the event the school bus is equipped with a spare tire and rim assembly, it shall be the same size and meet all minimum requirements as specified for the assembly mounted on the school bus.
(f) In the event a tire carrier is required, it shall be mounted in an accessible location outside the passenger compartment.
(g) The minimum tread depth shall be 4/32 inch on the steering axle and 2/32 inch on all other axles.
(h) Each school bus shall be equipped with snow or all season tires on all drive wheels between November 15 and April 15th of each year.
