(a) All cages, enclosures and their surroundings shall be kept in a sanitary condition which impedes the transmission of parasites and diseases.

(b) Drinking water shall be provided daily in clean containers and as often and necessary for the health and comfort of the animal. Swimming and wading pools shall be cleaned as needed. Enclosures shall provide adequate drainage of surface water and runoff to prevent accumulation of standing water.

(c) Food shall be of a type and quantity sufficient to meet the nutritional requirements of the subject wildlife, and shall be provided in clean containers, in an unspoiled and uncontaminated condition. If self-feeders are used, adequate measures shall be taken to prevent molding, contamination, and deterioration or caking of food.

(d) Excreta shall be removed from primary enclosures as often as necessary to prevent contamination of the animals contained therein and to minimize disease hazards and to reduce odors.

(e) Subsequent to the presence of an animal with an infectious or transmissible disease, cages, rooms, and hard-surfaced pens or runs shall be sanitized by:

(1) Washing them with hot water, at a temperature of at least 180°F at source, and soap or detergent, as in a mechanical washer;

(2) Washing all soiled surfaces with a detergent solution followed by a safe and effective disinfectant; or

(3) Cleaning all soiled surfaces with pressurized steam.

(f) Pens or runs using gravel, sand, or dirt, shall be sanitized when necessary as directed by the attending veterinarian.
