Rule 16-3-2.1 - Any individual, group, or organization may submit an application to MDAH to sponsor a state historical marker

Universal Citation: MS Code of Rules 16-3-2.1
Current through September 24, 2024

In order for a site to qualify for a marker, the applicant must show that the subject is of historical significance to the local community, state, or nation. For places of worship, preference will be given to historic structures and/or structures associated with significant historical events, persons, or communities. For cemeteries, markers should recognize the cemetery's association with a community or significant persons, and/or cemetery art. The Board of Trustees may accept or reject any application for state historical markers.

Upon receipt of a completed state historical marker application, including relevant background information, the application will be reviewed by a committee composed of MDAH staff and appointed by the director. Based on the information provided by the sponsor(s), along with other supporting documentation, the committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees concerning the application(s). The state historical marker committee will meet monthly, if necessary, to consider new applications and present them for approval at the next regularly scheduled board meeting.

The text of a state historical marker shall be drafted by MDAH staff in consultation with the sponsor. MDAH reserves the right to approve the final marker text. Upon approval of a text, MDAH staff will order the marker and provide copies of the order information to the sponsor.

Sponsors of new state historical markers shall be solely responsible for the cost of the marker(s), and a signed statement from the sponsor(s) must be included with the application. The manufacturer will bill the sponsor directly. MDAH will not accept or process payments for state historical marker(s).

The purchase of a replacement marker and/or the repair of an existing state historical marker shall be the sole responsibility of the original sponsor or other applicant(s), and a signed statement approving the cost of the replacement or repair must be included with the application for replacement.

Miss. Code §§ 25-59-1, 39-7-1 (1972, as amended).
