Section 7.01 - Establishment, Purpose, Duties

In acknowledgment of the diverse health and safety issues surrounding unarmed combative sports, in an effort to further enhance the safety of all participants in the sports in Massachusetts, the Commission shall establish a Medical Advisory Board to assist and advise it relative to all medical issues. To those ends, the Board shall be established and function subject to the following:

(1) The Board shall consist of at least three members to be appointed by majority vote of the Commission, all of whom shall be licensed physicians or licensed medical professionals. Each member shall be appointed to serve for a term of two years and shall serve at the pleasure of the Commission. The Commission shall designate one member as chairman of the Board.

(2) The Board shall attend at least one regularly scheduled Commission meeting per year.

(3) The Board shall apprise the Commission of all contemporary, appropriate medical standards for the physical and mental examination of unarmed combatants necessary for licensure.

(4) The Board shall advise the Commission as to the physical fitness of an unarmed combatant, if requested.

(5) The Board shall review the manner in which the Commission accepts and reviews medical records required to be submitted to the Commission and make recommendations for improvement, if requested.

(6) The Board shall review 523 CMR and/or the Commission's practices and make any recommendations which it deems necessary to protect the health and welfare of unarmed combatants in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

(7) Any action taken by the Board must be approved by majority vote.

(8) In addition to attending one regular Commission meeting per year under 523 CMR 7.01(2), the Board shall meet at least once a year in order to fulfill its duties listed in 523 CMR 7.01(1) through (7). The Board shall also convene at any time requested by the Commission and review any issue forwarded to it by the Commission.
