A. Filling Prescriptions. Prescriptions for drugs covered by Medicaid other than a controlled substance shall expire one year after the date prescribed by a licensed prescriber.

These prescriptions shall not be refilled more than 11 times in one year. A prescription for a controlled dangerous substance listed in schedule II shall expire 90 days after the date written, and no refills are allowed. A prescription for a controlled dangerous substance listed in schedule III, IV or V shall expire six months after the date written. Expired prescriptions shall not be refillable or renewable. Payment shall be made for prescriptions refilled for controlled substances in schedule III, IV and V not more than five times or more than six months after issue date and only to the extent indicated by the prescriber on the original prescription, and is restricted by state and federal statutes.

B. Transferring Prescriptions. Transfer of a prescription from one pharmacy to another is allowed if less than one year has passed since the date prescribed and in accordance with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy requirements. Transfer of a prescription for a controlled substance in schedule III, IV and V from one pharmacy to another is allowed if less than six months has passed since the date prescribed, and transfer of a prescription for a controlled substance in Schedule II is not allowed. Transfers of prescriptions shall be allowed in accordance with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy regulations.
