A. A licensee shall use the following sources in accordance with the manufacturer's radiation safety and handling instructions:
1. cesium-137 as a sealed source in needles
and applicator cells for topical, interstitial, and intracavitary treatment of
cancer;
2. cobalt-60 as a sealed
source in needles and applicator cells for topical, interstitial, and
intracavitary treatment of cancer;
3. gold-198 as a sealed source in seeds for
interstitial treatment of cancer;
4. iodine-125 as a sealed source in seeds for
interstitial treatment of cancer; and
5. iridium-192 as seeds encased in nylon
ribbon for interstitial treatment of cancer.
B. A licensee shall use only brachytherapy sources for therapeutic medical uses:
1. as
approved in the Sealed Source and Device Registry for manual brachytherapy
medical use. The manual brachytherapy sources may be used for manual
brachytherapy uses that are not explicitly listed in the Sealed Source and
Device Registry, but shall be used in accordance with the radiation safety
conditions and limitations described in the Sealed Source and Device Registry;
or
2. in research to deliver
therapeutic doses for medical use in accordance with an active Investigational
Device Exemption (IDE) application accepted by the FDA, provided the
requirements of LAC 33:XV.713.A.1 are met.
