Rule 481-58.23 - Dental, Diagnostic, and Other Services

(1) Dental services.

a. The nursing facility personnel shall assist residents to obtain regular and emergency dental services. (Ill)

b. Transportation arrangements shall be made when necessary for the resident to be transported to the dentist's office. (Ill)

c. Dental services shall be performed only on the request of the resident, responsible relative, or legal representative. The resident's physician shall be advised of the resident's dental problems. (Ill)

d. All dental reports or progress notes shall be included in the clinical record. (Ill)

e. Nursing personnel shall assist the resident in carrying out dentist's recommendations. (Ill)

f. Dentists shall be asked to participate in the in-service program of the facility. (Ill)

(2) Diagnostic services.

a. The nursing facility shall make provisions for promptly securing required clinical laboratory. X-ray, and other diagnostic services. (Ill)

b. All diagnostic services shall be provided only on the written, signed order of a physician. (Ill)

c. Agreements shall be made with the local hospital laboratory or independent laboratory to perform specific diagnostic tests when they are required. (Ill)

d. Transportation arrangements for residents shall be made, when necessary, to and from the source of service. (Ill)

e. Copies of all diagnostic reports shall be requested by the facility and included in the resident's clinical record. (Ill)

f. The physician ordering the specific diagnostic service shall be promptly notified of the results. (Ill)

g. Simple tests such as customarily done by nursing personnel for diabetic residents may be performed in the facility. (Ill)

(3) Other services.

a. The nursing facility shall assist residents to obtain such supportive services as requested by the physician. (Ill)

b. Transportation arrangements shall be made when necessary. (Ill)

c. Services could include the need for prosthetic devices, glasses, hearing aids, and other necessary items. (Ill)
